Thanks for keeping us informed as to the plans for the new restaurant. After moving into the neighborhood from Texas nine years ago, I was excited at the time to see that there was a Tex-Mex restaurant/bar. That was until I tried the food (once). I always thought that was a great location and am excited to see the place transform, both as I drive by and here on this site.

You could try using the Restaurant POS called Viewtouch. It runs on Linux, BSD and OSX. We've used it at a client high volume restaurant for 5 years and it runs quite well.

Don't know what the situation is now with the company, but you might try contacting them at www.viewtouch.com

Hope that helps!

I have a restaurant as well and am a huge Mac fan, We have 5 of them including a MacPro, PowerMac, and Mini's. I have been searching for the last 2 years for a Mac based POS system. If someone builds it, they will sell!

Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations on your restaurant venture. We've learned so much already and feel so much more informed for our future restaurant dreams. From reading what you've been through, maybe we'll just stick to blogging!

I've been thinking about writing my own POS for a while. My cousin is thinking of trying to open an eatery, and I want to use it as a chance to work with them to build a POS built on open standards. This would make it simple to write clients for all sorts of devices (iphone, touchscreen kiosk, the tables themselves...) and give you more options as to what kind of server(s) (computers, not waitstaff...) you could use. Its still very much in the concept phase, but its good to see some potential interest out there.

Scott,

I too am desperately trying to find a Mac EPOS solution for my restaurant in the UK before I sign a new contract for a new PC/Windows solution after my last failed.

Sadly my search is also proving fruitless in the UK. Xsilva and PayGo are two great retail POS solutions, with Xsilva being my favourite. There are other companies producing solutions aswell, many of which can be downloaded from the Apple US website.

Sadly, none of these guys seem to have a handle on what a restaurant needs to function from its EPOS. None of them seem capable, or willing to make the jump to inputting products using simple 'hotkeys' rather than mouse clicks and typing, or barcode scanning. Fix that - and allow certain products to be printed in certain locations and you are half way there.

Come on Xsilva - get it together!!!!!

The POS/OE4 software you mention is also getting close, but needs a new push to become restaurant friendly. I cannot believe that these companies are being so stupid as to miss out an entire industry that could make use of their otherwise fantastic product. Start counting the drive-thru's, diners, canteens, Chinese, Indian, African, English, American, Italian and any other type of food outlet and realise just how big the market you are turning your backs on is.

Please.

Allison- Regarding noise level in your restaurant. You may want to check out the Buck Hotel in Feasterville,Pa. They have interlaced sound deadening "clouds" in the ceiling of their bar. They have a tile floor and an open ceiling, also their bar can seat approx 100 pp. I believe they used sound deadening material that is used in recording studios.-- Good Luck Marc J
